The first thing you can do is have a heart to heart with yourself. Ask yourself if you've been spending above what you make. Determine what you "need" and what you "want".
If you have a "shopping addiction" try to figure out why.
I hear that Dave Ramsey's book "Financial Peace" is really helpful, but I've never read it. I, personally, do not do well with cash, and I've heard that his model is cash based.
